Question:

What is SCAmethyst?

Answer:

SCAmethyst is sun colored amethyst, and sometimes called Sun Purple. This glass contains manganese, which causes it to turn a delicate purple when exposed to the sun for a period of time. Manganese was needed for military purposes in World War I, causing glass companies to turn to other chemicals as clarifying agents. Therefore, SCAmethyst glass generally dates prior to about 1920. Ocassionally, glass produced later may turn, due to the company having a backlog of manganese. The page, About Us, talks a little about our beginnings with this glass.
